Big Project, Bigger Impact — 230 Mini-Splits Across 14 Campus Buildings

 

In the heart of North Idaho, where strong communities and lasting institutions go hand in hand, Legacy Heating & Cooling is proud to play a small part in something much bigger.

 

Right now, at the University of Idaho, we’re installing 230 ducted heat pump systems across 14 campus housing buildings—spanning more than 52,000 square feet. It’s one of the most extensive projects we’ve taken on, and it’s the kind of work that reminds us why we do what we do.

 

This multi-phase project runs from April 2025 through June 2026, and we’ve been involved since the early planning stages—supporting both the engineering and install process. Being brought in from the beginning says a lot about the trust institutions like the University of Idaho place in our team, and we don’t take that lightly.

 

Purpose-Built for Student Life

Campus life comes with its own set of challenges—and so does designing the right commercial HVAC system to support it. Each building has its quirks: different layouts, varied occupancy, and unique heating and cooling needs. These are graduate and family housing units, not traditional dorms, which means zoning, comfort, and efficiency all matter a little more.

 

With four expert Legacy team members currently on-site, we’re taking a phased approach to the install—working closely with campus staff to minimize disruption and ensure the safety and comfort of residents throughout the process.

 

Coordinating a project like this takes more than equipment and a blueprint. Between campus schedules, tight access points, and unpredictable North Idaho weather, we’ve had to stay flexible and collaborative every step of the way. Our crews bring experience, of course—but they also bring a local pride and problem-solving mindset that makes the work smoother, safer, and more successful.
